Clean up event at culmination of Sea Week 2014 nets 18,000L of rubbish off our coast!
This Saturday just gone, the 8th of March 2014 was the "Love Your Coast - Waiheke" Event, facilitated by Sustainable Coastlines NZ.
It was a culmination of a series of events on the island all through out the week including a forest and bird clean up at Te Wharau Bay on wednesday, and a school clean up day.
I had the pleasure of participating in this event, and I chatted to Camden Howitt and Riley Webster, two of the organisers of the day, about it afterwards.

These guys really care about coastlines!
The day was successful by all accounts, and over 200 volunteers registered to pick up rubbish from our beaches and causeways!
The event was publicised around the Sustainable Coastlines website and many people came over from 'The Mainland' to participate.
The Ostend registration point was where most of the local Waiheke Island residents started from, and around 40% of the people working on the day were.
"We were really impressed by the number and the enthusiasm of the locals at this event" said Riley Webster.
In the end, over the entire week, 18 cubes of rubbish was removed, that's 18,000 litres, or about half of a large shipping container.

There is a great community spirit in Waiheke, and an urge to look after our natural environment. We all want to be good Kaitiaki, caretakers of our island.
