For the last few years it has been run as a Zero Waste event. This year, the Waiheke Resources Trust once again ran the stations, opening it to community groups from the island to manage a station each.
The local Waiheke Branch of the Green Party provided volunteers for one of the stalls and overall it was a great success! There were volunteers present through out the day, members of the public came to visit and chat and learn about waste streams.
Waste that would otherwise have gone straight to landfill was diverted into a number of streams: mixed recycling, which was later sorted, clean paper to be made into paper again, and dirty paper to go to compost as well as food waste which went to a local farm to feed animals.
Overall over 84% of waste was diverted away from landfill!
This is a great success, and a testament to the values of this island.
